In the later part of 2020 there were a number of well-known cockatoos who passed away, leaving devastated owners and a community of other cockatoo people touched by the tragic deaths of these birds and the grieving of their people. It has been powerful to see so many supportive and sympathetic responses from the wonderful community of cockatoo lovers to the people mourning the loss of their beautiful birds.
Inspired by the overwhelming community response, we decided to build an online memorial to the cockatoos who have died. Initially, we wanted to create just memorials to the birds who had passed in the past year, but we expanded the memorial pages to include previous years as more information comes to us.
View the Memorials through the Memorial Pages link at the top of the website, or use this link.
Our hope is that that people will find this project healing and commemorative and want to contribute information on their own precious birds who have passed on. We have gathered some information on birds who have passed from publicly available posts on social media, and we will remove, edit, or otherwise modify any memorial listing upon request. We will add any other birds whose people want to be a part of the project. Note that some of the current information is not complete. we will edit and update as needed.
The simplest way to submit info for the memorial pages is to fill out this form online, but you can also email us if you prefer.
The information needed for each listing is: cockatoo name, owner name, species, gender, hatch date (estimated if not known), date of death, a paragraph of text about the bird (a brief eulogy), and a photograph of the bird. The image will be square, 600 x 600, 72dpi, and we would prefer photos that do not include other birds or people in the photo.
This is how the individual listings will appear on the memorial pages:
